Google AdWords for Retail Businesses

Who to target?

Customers searching for:

  • Gift ideas
  • Local stores
  • Products and services they can't buy locally
  • Comparison shopping while in-store

It is a myth that shoppers only visit e-commerce sites after searching online. In reality, three in four shoppers are more likely to visit local stores if they find helpful information in their search results.

Shoppers are actually inspired to visit after successfully finding out information such as the in-store availability of an item, store location and hours, or pricing at a nearby retail location.

Shoppers now spend more than 15 hours per week researching on their smartphones. They gather information and 'snack shop' at the pace and place that suits them best - not just on their smartphone, but at the office desktop and at home with a tablet.

What does this mean to you? Being top of Google’s search results is vital when advertising on mobile and desktop screens. Your Google AdWords campaigns need to exploit user expectations across the different devices they use. It is also essential that your website provides an effortless user experience across all devices. A poor user experience at any ‘touch-point’ could damage your business brand and force the potential customer to go elsewhere.

Seasonal search trends for retail businesses

Shoppers search throughout the year but often there are seasonal peak points. The live Google data graph below shows how searches for three types of search vary throughout the year and helps planning of your Google AdWords campaigns.

'Home furnishings' have increased searches during the holiday periods and even though there is less search volume during the summer holidays, customers are shopping throughout the year.

'New kitchen' searches follow a similar pattern as shoppers research ideas but there is a clear search increase in the New Year as consumers look to improve their homes for the year ahead.

The search for 'childrens toys' starts to ramp from September as shoppers start buying for Christmas and the trend continues right into December.

We can help you exploit that activity – and find opportunities for targeting shoppers in the quieter seasons.
